British Shorthair

If Garfield were to jump out of the comic strips and head to the cat show, he might be mistaken for a British Shorthair.

“Round” is a good description for this breed, but not fat. The body should be curvy and thick, with a plush coat and a knowing grin. They are considered one of the oldest recognized English breeds, claiming ancestry back to the domestic cats of Rome. They are calm and affectionate in the home, although rather heavy and preferring to be on the ground. Most cats stay relatively clean and rarely need a bath, but they do need to be brushed or combed to stimulate blood circulation and promote good health.

A grooming glove or mitten can make this process as simply as daily petting. The British coat is easy to care for and can be kept in good condition by daily petting with a grooming mitten. They can be found in any color or pattern, with the exception of Himalayan, although some clubs are restrictive on which colors may be shown. Copper eyes are considered a desirable attraction.
