Duprasi

This small member of the gerbil family is native to Liberia in North Central America. It’s unusual fat tail serves as a fat and moisture storage area because of the environment that it came from – a dry arid region with extended periods without food or water. Because of the fat unique tail, duprasis are sometimes also called club tailed gerbils.

Feeding

In captivity their diet should consist of a good mixture of parrot seed (which contains dried fruits & vegetables), dry dog food, fresh leafy greens such as – spinach, cabbage and dandelion. You may also offer your Duprasi live insects such as – mealworms and crickets.

Housing

They should be housed much in the same way as a hamster or gerbil. Pine should be the only substrate used as cedar will cause health problems! Fresh water and food should be available at all times. Your Duprasi will enjoy tubes and tunnels to crawl through. Exercise wheels and balls are also a good choice for them! Being in the rodent family they like to chew…..so supply them with fresh branches or commercial chew blocks.

Did you know ?

Duprasis are very unique and somewhat still rare as pets. They are a naturally tame animal and rarely bite. By nature they are pair animals and may do so for life. Should a recent purchase go from very docile to very aggressive you probably have a female about to give birth!!
